Patient Spotlight

We have so many patients at Speech Pathway who have long journeys that require incredibly hard work from their entire family and we want to start recognizing them for the effort they put in daily! Each month we’ll be highlighting a few of our patients who have shown so much improvement throughout their marathon in speech therapy. See our amazing patients below!

Karsten C.

Karsten is an amazing four year old who has been in therapy for over two years. He’s worked very hard on saying his name, speaking in phrases and sentences, and becoming more confident! Karsten can say his letters and letter sounds, and loves counting. He loves all things cars, riding his bike and scooter around the neighborhood, and especially loves puzzles! Karsten’s favorite food is pizza with ranch (who doesn’t love it)! Miss Katie gets to work with Kartsen and says he is, “a fun and sweet boy, who loves science experiments, cars, and showing off his amazing sounds! He has become more aware of his own speech and has started to self-correct. Karsten’s family is so supportive and they do a lot of work at home to help him succeed in his goals! He is such a hard worker and we are all looking forward to the continued progress he will make!” Way to work, Karsten!

Paisley N

Paisley is a sweet and sassy seven year old who has been in therapy for three years. She’s more easily understood now by her friends, teachers, and people she doesn’t know. Paisley is rocking school because she is better with letter and letter combination sounds, which helps when sounding out words when reading. Paisley is a smart and beautiful girl who loves running, swimming, and playing with her sister and animals. She is caring and thoughtful of others. Her caregivers absolutely love her and love seeing her grow and meet new challenges head on. Miss Kelsey loves working with Paisley because she “is such a sweet and spunky girl!  I love her bubbly and infectious personality.  She is always happy and always has tons of energy.  Our sessions always seem to go super quickly, but time flies when you’re having fun!” Thank you for bringing the energy to Speech Pathway, Paisley!

Spotlight on: Intense Academy

Intense Academy was, simply, incredible. Thirteen children joined us with four families traveling from New Mexico, Florida, and Texas this year. It was so exciting to have all of our families join us for our first Intense Academy in our new building; making everything more accessible and transitions easier on everyone. Campers had a dedicated space to play and learn, so activities were a breeze. Our new building made social opportunities more accessible given the multiple locations to interact with others throughout the space and helped with creating confidence and independent communication with peers. Being outside was a highlight for our campers, which includes the new playground and water day! Miss Amy loves working this camp every year because she gets to witness the kids become more outgoing and comfortable with each other. Miss Emily loves watching the staff, interns, clinicians, volunteers, and families work together to achieve levels of progress and achievement that far surpasses what any single clinician can do alone. She’s inspired by the teamwork and dedication to a shared vision!

We can’t talk about Intense Academy without mentioning how incredible it is to watch the families come together to form a community. They get the opportunity to network with each other, meet families walking a similar journey, and find community in what can be a very isolating journey. This year we offered a family night at the splash pad and it was incredible to watch the support network that formed from the proximity. It’s awesome to meet other families who are fighting similar battles so that we can all support and lean on each other when things are hard. Camp provides the opportunity for families to connect and build relationships that extend beyond this summer at Camp Communicate. It was an incredibly successful first session. Stay tuned for a recap on our July Intense Academy, happening now!

Wanting to join in on the summer fun?

You’re in luck! There are a few spots left in our intermediate and preschool Kid Connect sessions AND our last two Speech Spot sessions this summer! Give us the privilege of working with your kiddo for one week. Whether you’re looking for connection, friendship, or just FUN, we’re here for you! Check out our website for our open sessions!

Speech Spot is an intensive week of therapy. For children 4 and up, we offer at least one individual intervention session per day. If you’re looking to take advantage of the summer vacation to advance your child’s speech and language skills, this is the PERFECT opportunity! Our highly trained staff knows how to target speech and language development while also having summer FUN. This would be fantastic for patients who no longer need the intensity of Intense Academy, but aren’t yet ready for Kid Connect. Talk with your therapist about whether Speech Spot would be a good fit for your child! If you’re interested, head over to our Speech Spot page to check out the times and enroll!

Kid Connect is an extension of our social groups. We offer a 1:3 adult to child ratio with specialized intervention for peer to peer interaction. Each week is a new set of games, crafts, and fun for each child involved and we can ensure we do everything we can to make sure your child is successful with us. In pairing with you to provide the best summer experience, we can provide a fun, social experience for your child to flourish among friends!

We have exciting news! We’re looking for a speech-language pathologist to join our incredible team. From AAC to feeding to specialists in apraxia of speech, we have all the support and collaboration you could ask for in a new job. Our family atmosphere makes for an incredible work environment and we’re hoping to add another amazing SLP to our team! Experience is preferred, but clinical fellows will also be considered! Do you know someone who would love to be a part of what we have going here?

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Brant Bentley!

Miss Ali got married on June 2, 2023, and we couldn’t be happier for her! Speech Pathway employees can confirm that everything was perfect. Miss Ali was gorgeous, the food was amazing, and the dance floor was at capacity! When asked about this perfect day, Miss Ali said, “I loved getting to marry my best friend before God and our favorite people. We had the most amazing day celebrating our love with our friends and family who we love so much! It was just a dream!” Congratulations, Mrs. Bentley!

Social group registration for the 2023-2024 school year is LIVE! We’re offering different groups this year for preschool and early elementary (in addition to our typical intermediate and adolescent groups), click “Learn More” below to find out the dates, times, and ages for all of our groups!

Upcoming Events

We’re excited to announce that our open house will be a little bit different this year, featuring a resource fair for all of our patients and their families! We’ve reached out to some of our favorite businesses to provide our families with information about accessible opportunities for patient care as well as activities! If you’re looking for a speech, language, or hearing screening, register by clicking the button below and for all of our graduates, we hope to see you on August 6 from 3-5pm!

Is your child on an IEP? Is your child entering school this year and will likely be placed on an IEP? Or are you just wondering about your rights as a parent? We’re so excited to be bringing the Family Support Network to Speech Pathway FREE to our families! On August 12 at 10am, we’ll be opening the floor to have a conversation about IEPs and parent rights, answering whatever questions you have! RSVP below  for this incredible opportunity!

Therapy Tip

The weather is warming up, so here are some tips to carry over your speech and language skills to the home environment!

    • Gather up our favorite toys and wash them! Stay inside to wash them in the bath where the air is cold and the water can be colder, or step outside in the sunshine with the hose!
      • Target verbs:  wash, dry, dip, clean, rub, throw, swim, kick.
      • Work on target sounds in between washing each toy.
      • Work on language expansion through washing toys: if your little one says, “Wash,” we can expand the phrase by saying, “Wash toys!” or “Wash truck!”
      • Work on receptively identifying vocabulary/adjectives (Where is your big car?) and expressively identifying vocabulary (Is that the BIG car or the LITTLE car?)
      • In your wash bucket, add sensory toys like pom pom balls or coins. It’s always fun to discover and play in water!
    • Going to the beach? Perfect for burying items and uncovering them!
    • Make some DIY sidewalk chalk paint! Perfect for painting the sidewalk!
      • Target nouns, such as colors, shapes, drawing animals, etc.
      • Work on target sounds while painting or paint the words on the sidewalk you’re working on!
      • Make the sidewalk paint together! Talk through what ingredients go in, how much of each ingredient, and talk through the verbs you’re using! Remember: the best way to build receptive language is through radio commentary throughout the day!
    • Heading to a splash pad? What a fantastic time to work on verbs! What can you do through the water? Jump, crawl, run, walk, clap, stomp, etc.
    • Everyone needs a dip in the pool every once in a while, why not use the diving board or slide to target your speech and language goals?
      • Imitating animal noises and movements off the diving board
      • Say a word with a target sound 5 times before taking a leap or sliding down
    • Make some homemade popsicles
      • Target as much language input as you can by talking about the steps to making popsicles, stirring and mixing, hot/cold, and having fun together!
    • Ask your clinician about more ways to target your goals on your vacation, throughout your summer days, or through your activities! They would love to help!
