Patient Spotlight

We have so many patients at Speech Pathway who have long journeys that require incredibly hard work from their entire family and we want to start recognizing them for the effort they put in daily! Each month we’ll be highlighting a few of our patients who have shown so much improvement throughout their marathon in speech therapy. See our amazing patients below!

Kaitlyn L.

At twelve years old, Kaitlyn has been in speech for nine years with incredible success. Her mother states she’s now reading, and able to do most things on her own! Kaitlyn has made incredible progress in school, is a sweet girl, and is always helpful. Miss Amy loves working with Kaitlyn! “She’s a spirited, Barbie-loving young lady who is determined and focused during all of her sessions. She has such a fun sense of humor. Kaitlyn is patient and will work on a sound, goal, or target multiple times until she gets it right! Nothing can stop her!” We love having Kaitlyn’s sassy personality walk the halls of Speech Pathway! You go girl!

London H.

London is a sweet seven year old gal who has been in therapy for four years. Miss Abby loves getting to see London and how much she’s grown in her time at Speech Pathway! “She has made incredible progress and continues to work so very hard during her sessions. She always brings fun and spunk to the clinic, and loves saying hi to all of her friends in the halls each week. London is generous, funny, and a joy to be around!” London’s caregivers are just as proud of her! This year, she sang a solo in her Christmas pageant, and is understood by her teachers now! Impressively, London is able to have a conversation with complete strangers. Her caregivers are so proud of her progress. “London is a very sweet child who works very hard and has many challenges to overcome. Being able to communicate has opened so many doors. We love seeing her face light up when she tells us about her day, knowing that we understand what she is saying.” At Speech Pathway, we love when kiddos feel amazing about their progress too! Way to go, London!

Madelyn W.

Madelyn is sixteen years old and has been in therapy for two years. She works so incredibly hard on her articulation each week and has the biggest, most beautiful heart. She’s always willing to lend a hand to others! Her caregivers are incredibly proud of the progress she’s made on her articulation. Miss Katie loves working with Madelyn, and says, “She’s a sweet and funny girl who has worked hard on her speech sounds throughout her time at Speech Pathway! She brings a lot of fun to our sessions, and she is motivated to work towards greater intelligibility in her daily life. I’m grateful to work with her and I can’t wait to see her continued progress!” Madelyn, we are so proud of you!

Ruby L.

Ruby has been in therapy for two years with Speech Pathway, and she’s brought so much spunk to the clinic! At six years old, Miss Abby says she has one of the sweetest hearts she’s ever met, and will never fail to make you laugh. “She is kind to everyone, asks the best questions, and is always mindful of others’ needs and feelings. Ruby has worked so hard and has made such good progress on her speech sounds!” Her caregiver is especially proud of Ruby. She’s worked SO hard on the beginning and ending consonants of words! “We can now usually understand the words she is trying to say and it’s become much less frustrating for her when she’s communicating with us. Her vocabulary of hard words used in the correct context has soared. Ruby is an amazing kid and doesn’t know a stranger. She is always excited and welcomes meeting new people. I love that she is inclusive of everyone. She is inquisitive, she has an amazing imagination, and she loves to create and try new things.” We’re so proud Ruby is soaring because of her communication skills! Way to go, sis!

Spotlight on: Camp Communicate

We have a few spots left for all of our camps this summer! We’re so excited to see what these sessions hold. If you’re looking for an amazing summer camp that is INCLUSIVE for all needs, Camp Communicate is the place to be. Head over to our Camp Communicate page to check out what weeks we still have available. We’d love to have you join us for some summer fun! If you are not interested in attending camps but know someone who is and would benefit from financial support, check out our option to gift a camp!

Intense Academy is an intensive camp focused on improving oral-motor planning and/or articulation skills.  Camp is offered for 2 weeks each session, campers are required to attend both weeks of camp.  Camp will also target behavioral intervention as it pertains to the child’s ability to effectively participate in group activities and comply with instructions as well as improving communication behaviors. The camp will typically run for three hours each day M-F and will be individualized to what each child needs.  Campers will participate in individual, small group, and large group sessions to target communication goals and comply with instructions to improve the ability to participate in joint/group activities.  The focus will be to decrease frustration while increasing communication and social skills.  Group parent/caregiver training and question/answer sessions will also be provided for carryover of skills within the home program or coordination of services with the child’s private therapists. Camp generally has a one to one ratio of adults to children. Staff includes Speech-Language Pathologists, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, graduate student interns, and undergraduate student volunteers. Camps will also have guidance from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and/or assistance from Registered Behavior Technicians to assist staff with facilitation of social and communication targets.  Children generally make marked progress during this intense camp, and past data has shown that the primary change has been that speech therapy and home programs are more effective throughout the coming year after this intensive intervention and training.

Speech Spot is focused on providing intervention at a more intense rate than what your child would receive in a typical week of speech therapy. Campers will be provided two individual speech session per day, targeting goals that are important for their communicative success, as well as multiple group sessions throughout the day. Camp will generally have a ratio of one adult to two campers. Staff includes Speech-Language Pathologists, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, graduate student interns, and undergraduate student volunteers. Speech Spot is open to any families excited to take advantage of summer vacation to make a significant change in their child’s speech and language skills! Think Speech Spot is the camp for you? We’d love to help your child meet their full potential through individualized and group therapy!

Kid Connect focuses on primarily group intervention with 2 individual sessions per week. Since we’ve already developed a great program with our yearly social groups, why not continue them through the summer? With ratios of one adult to three campers, our Speech-Language Pathologists, Speech-Language Pathology Assistants, graduate student interns, and undergraduate student volunteers are skilled in targeting social communication and language development through group games, activities, and intervention methods. Kid Connect is a place where your child can belong; they can find friends, be themselves, and work on interacting with others in a safe environment under the supervision of professionals skilled in facilitating social communication. We’d love to bring this connection into your lives!

All of our staff is highly trained in communication and behavior as well as facilitating social interactions. Our staff will help your child grow in a safe, encouraging environment while forming relationships, building confidence, and having fun!

This is a great question and one we can only answer by getting to know your child a little better. When you fill out your application, check the boxes to let us know what camps you may be interested in. The more information you give us on the application, the better able we are to find the right fit for your child. Intense Academy offers intensive intervention to facilitate functional communication. Speech Spot is our camp for less intense intervention, but those who still need some extra work on speech and language development. Kid Connect is an extension of our groups program that focuses on social communication and relationship-building. If you’re still unsure, fill out our application with the most information possible and we can help guide you through the process!

Camp Communicate consists of both individual and group interventions and is requires enrollment for an entire session at a time (one week for Speech Spot or Kid Connect and 2 weeks for Intense Academy). Therapy Tip

The weather is warming up, so here are some tips to carry over your speech and language skills at home!

    • Prepositions at the Playground: You can play fun games like “Simon Says” with your child at the playground to target many prepositions including: on, off, under, on top of, inside, and behind. While you are “Simon”, give your child prompts like “Simon says hide under the slide” or “Simon says sit on the swing”. Then, have your child take a turn being Simon! Encourage them to use prepositions while describing the location they want you to go to. You can make this easier for them by giving them choices (“Should I go over or under something? Should I go under the slide or the seesaw?”).
  •
    • Sticker Pictures: Have your child make a fun scene on a blank piece of paper using crayons and stickers! Your child can begin by drawing a background and then add stickers to create an imaginary world. While putting the stickers on the page, have your child describe where they are putting them using prepositions. You can also make this a following directions game by describing where to put the stickers (ex: “Put the dog sticker next to the tree”). Worried about waste? There are also reusable sticker packs that you can use over and over again
  •
    • Drawing Directions: This creative game is great for kids who love art! In this game, you give verbal instructions for drawing a specific picture without telling your child what you are describing. As you describe, you can use prepositions to describe the objects in relation to one another. For example, if you are having your child draw a cat you can tell them to “Draw a circle and then draw a long oval directly under the circle so that their tops are connected”. This game can target many concepts including following directions, using descriptive language, and using prepositions. It is tricky and lots of fun.
  •
    • Scavenger Hunt: Target prepositions on a scavenger hunt around your house or neighborhood. Create a list of 10-15 prompts that include prepositions and have your child go on an adventure! For example, a clue could be “Start at the door, walk towards the kitchen, and look under the object directly to your right”. You can tailor the scavenger hunt so that it challenges your child while still being fun and engaging.

Congratulations, Miss Kylie!

Following a series of test questions and essays indicating her advanced training in childhood apraxia of speech, Miss Kylie has earned the honor of being listed on the Apraxia Kids website as highly trained! This resource is for parents of children who have been diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech, who are looking for a provider who has training in the specific area of childhood apraxia of speech. We knew she was amazing, but now we know it’s official! Huge, congratulations Miss Kylie!

The Months May Be Gone, But the Moments Stay Forever

You Ask, We Answer

You Ask We Answer is a place you can come to find answers to all the burning questions you, as a parent, may have about speech, language, feeding or Speech Pathway in general- straight from the horses mouth! Or, in our case, the minds of our brilliant, yet humble, experts in communication.

Can my child have both private speech services and school speech service?

Yes, your child can receive both private speech therapy and school-based speech services! School speech therapy is typically focused on addressing speech and language needs that directly impact your child’s academic success. Private speech therapy, on the other hand, allows for a more individualized approach and can target a wider range of communication goals, including those not necessarily tied to school performance.

Many families find that combining both services provides comprehensive support for their child’s speech and language development. If your child is receiving services in both settings, it’s important to keep communication open between your school therapist and private therapist to ensure consistency in goals and progress.
